Kenyan gospel singer Daddy Owen has criticised the events surrounding X influencer Albert Ojwang’s death and the official police report, which he described as careless, insensitive, and misleading.

Albert Ojwang died just hours after being arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

In a statement shared via his X account on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Owen accused the police of rushing to defend themselves rather than showing compassion and responsibility. He added that the police should urgently pull down the statement, as it only worsens the pain for Albert’s grieving family.

He expressed concern that the statement issued by the police was rushed and prematurely framed Ojwang’s death, even before an autopsy report had been released.

“Whoever wrote and published this letter made grave, premature errors—calling it “false publication” before a court ruling and declaring the cause of death before the pathology report. It’s deeply insensitive to the family, and the police should urgently take it down,” Daddy Owen stated.

Adding;

“Criminal or not, every person deserves absolute protection from the police, in or out of custody. What happened to Albert Ojwang is deeply condemnable and could spark far greater outrage than it appears.”

Police report

According to police, Albert was being held over allegations of false publication on social media. However, his death and the explanation offered by authorities have sparked widespread outrage online and among rights advocates.

The police, in their statement released on Sunday, June 8, 2025, claimed that Ojwang sustained fatal head injuries after hitting himself against the wall while in a cell at the Central Police Station in Nairobi. They said officers on duty rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

To calm the growing public unrest, the NPS said the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had launched a probe into the matter, promising transparency and adherence to the law.

But Albert’s family believes otherwise. His father, Meshack Opiyo, is convinced that his son died while in custody and that the police are not telling the whole truth.

Opiyo recalled being informed that his son had been arrested for allegedly insulting a senior government official on X. Albert was initially held at Mawego Police Station before being transferred to Nairobi overnight.

“When I arrived at Central Police Station, I was told Albert had died from self-inflicted injuries. But that explanation doesn’t make sense. It’s suspicious,” Opiyo said.

The family is now calling for a full, independent investigation and for those responsible to be held accountable.
