Butita backs Flaqo amid backlash from forex traders over comedy skit

Comedian and SPM Buzz CEO Eddie Butita has defended fellow comedian Flaqo Raz following the wave of criticism the digital creator has faced from forex traders following his viral comedy skit.
Speaking in a video shared on his Instagram page on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Butita said the story of Flaqo and the forex community is inherently humorous and noted that Flaqo did not single out or mention any individual.
He emphasised that the skit was created purely for comedic purposes and to entertain audiences, not to attack or malign anyone.
“This story of Flaqo and the forex traders is really funny. You know, Flaqo did not mention anyone. He was simply making jokes, but some people felt offended and responded aggressively, replying left, right and centre,” Butita said.
He added that Flaqo’s comic work was well-executed and gained widespread popularity, noting that the skit’s virality should be appreciated rather than criticised.
“As the Swahili saying goes, let those who praise the rain be praised. Flaqo created his comedy on forex brilliantly. It went viral; he did not mention anyone, yet some people felt aggrieved,” Butita explained, stressing that the humour was innocent and not directed at any specific person.

Butita further reminded audiences that comedy is subjective and that offence is not always the intention behind humorous content.
“Comedy is subjective, however,” he said, urging critics to understand that the skit was intended purely as entertainment.
Flaqo on backlash
Butita’s statement has come just two days after Flaqo, born Erastus Otieno, opened up about his viral skit that sparked backlash.
Speaking during an interview with Oga Obinna on Monday night, August 11, 2025, Flaqo explained that the idea for the skit was inspired by a viral meme about forex trading that is widely shared and joked about among social media users.
He said his intention was purely comic and not to target or offend anyone.
Additionally, the content creator clarified that during the production of the skit, he did not target any specific trader, emphasising that it was intended as a general skit with no ill intentions.
He added that after the clip went viral, he was shocked to discover the coincidence between the character he created innocently in his video and real traders, as highlighted in the comment section.
“It is a meme; everyone talks about it and I did not mean to target anybody. The guy removing the shorts was called Ken. Then, nikaona kwa comment section nikasema this coincidence is too much, but I did not target anybody; I cannot do that to anybody,” he explained.
Adding, “Mimi nikitoa content, huwa siyo ya ugomvi it is just out of a pure heart, just making fan of the situation.”
