Boutross recounts challenges he faced in his early career as an artist

Kenyan rapper and songwriter Boutross Mwebia Munene has shared the tough challenges he faced in his early music career.

Speaking at a local TV station on Friday night, August 9, 2025, he revealed moments that tested his resilience and passion for the craft.

“We’ve fought; it’s just that we were also crazy at that time. We’ve been blacklisted, chased out, I’ve even been hit with mud while performing on stage by fans at an event,” he recounted.

The Angela hitmaker said those experiences taught him valuable lessons about navigating the industry and safeguarding his image.

“Time is a teacher because I have been in certain situations so many times, knowing what to do and what to avoid. I came to realise there’s not much I can do with separating my life from my career because wherever I am, I’m still Boutross. I have to always watch out.”

Boutross credited his management team for helping him maintain focus and stay grounded, noting that they are deliberate about the people he interacts with and the spaces he appears in.

I have a team that is very cautious about the kind of things I do around people and the kind of people that come into my circle.

Shake It Off track

This comes days after he shared the unexpected origin story behind one of his fan-favourite tracks, Shake It Off.

Speaking on the night of Friday, August 1, 2025, during an interview with a local TV station, he disclosed that the song, which has captivated audiences with its catchy hook and laid-back energy, was crafted in a humble setting, right from his house.

“I was just chilling at home when I wrote Shake It Off,” Boutross said. “Then I felt like it needed a woman’s touch on the hook.”

Instead of reaching out to a professional singer, Boutross turned to someone close, his younger sister.

“I asked my small sis to record the hook for me, and she absolutely killed it,” he said.

The collaboration added a unique flair to the song, contributing to its widespread appeal. Fans have praised the track’s originality and the blend of Boutross’s signature lyrical flow with the soulful hook.

Boutross is making one thing clear in 2025. Nothing but vibes on vibes in his new jam Left Right (Shake it Off). The track is a blend of the Kenyan sound and hip-hop influences.

The music video features a mascot and cheerleaders who ultimately take you to groove.
