Alex Mwakideu to Bahati: Fulfil your promise to Harambee Stars
Radio presenter Alex Mwakideu has called out musician Kevin Bahati for failing to deliver on a promise he made to Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars.
The popular broadcaster was speaking on his radio show on Thursday, August 14, 2025, ahead of the much-anticipated international friendly match between Harambee Stars and Zambia, scheduled for this coming Sunday.
The background to this public exchange began when President William Ruto promised to reward Harambee Stars with Ksh2.5 million if they emerged victorious against Zambia. The pledge has generated excitement among fans and players, with expectations running high as the team prepares for the clash.
Mwakideu reminded Kenyans of another commitment, one made by Bahati himself. The award-winning singer had earlier vowed to give Harambee Stars Ksh1M, but according to Mwakideu, he has yet to fulfill it.

“Wakenya wanangoja mchezo wa Harambee Stars na Zambia. Unajua rais amesema sasa ni 2.5 mita. Bahati sasa na milioni moja sidhani kama ashafikisha, na hajafikisha. Peleka katika ofisi aseme milioni moja yangu ndio hapa. Isiwe issue,” Mwakideu said during his radio show.
He went on to emphasize that Bahati’s pledge should not become a lingering controversy, urging him to hand over the money to former footballer McDonald Mariga to pass on to the players. “Watu wanatoa 2.5 katika kila player. Sasa mia moja hata watagawana namna gani? Patia Mariga, mwambie apelekee wachezaji wa Harambee Stars,” Mwakideu added, suggesting that the contribution, though smaller than the president’s, would still be appreciated.
The radio host’s remarks have sparked debate among fans, with some agreeing that public promises to the national team should be honoured, while others argue that perhaps Bahati had his timeline or conditions for fulfilling the pledge.
The Harambee Stars, meanwhile, are deep in training ahead of Sunday’s fixture, which will be played on home soil. A win against Zambia would not only boost the team’s morale but also earn them the presidential bonus of Ksh2.5 million, a significant incentive as Kenya aims to strengthen its standing in African football.
Whether Bahati will heed Mwakideu’s call and deliver his promised Ksh1 million remains to be seen.
