Adelle Onyango: Refusing a ring and not taking my husband’s name ended my marriage

Radio and media personality Adelle Onyango has shared her personal experience with marriage, explaining how differences in expectations contributed to the end of her union.
Adelle reflected on her relationship with her former husband, Falgun Bhojak, revealing that what started as a happy partnership gradually faced challenges that could not be reconciled.
In a video doing rounds on social media, Adelle said their first Christmas together was wonderful, and the second was similarly joyful. However, by the third Christmas, the couple’s home and their relationship began to feel very different.
“In our third year together, it was not just our apartment that didn’t feel like home, but also my marriage,” Adelle said. She explained that it became clear that the wife her husband wanted was very different from the woman she was.

After several arguments, one evening in bed, he told her she had refused to give him three things he considered essential to a marriage: a child, wearing a ring, and taking his surname.

“After many arguments, one day in bed, he said to me, ‘You have refused to give me the three things that make a marriage. You won’t give me a child, you won’t wear a ring, and you refuse to take my name. I remember feeling like, Yes, he is right,” Adelle recalled.
Adelle said she recognised his point and accepted that she was not the traditional woman he wanted. She explained that this difference in expectations led to the end of the marriage, and the subsequent divorce involved a period of significant personal and emotional challenges.
Healing and moving forward
The couple, who had held a private and colourful wedding in 2017, have since separated. In past interviews, Adelle credited therapy as a crucial part of her healing process, helping her reflect on the relationship and move forward with her life.
The former radio presenter and Falgun Bhojak had exchanged vows in a private ceremony at Redhill Heights in Limuru on Friday, July 28, 2017.
Adelle’s story highlights how differences in personal values and expectations, particularly regarding tradition and cultural norms, can play a significant role in marital dynamics. She emphasised that understanding oneself and what one is willing to compromise on is vital in any relationship.
“I remember feeling like, yes, he is right. I was not a traditional woman. My marriage was over, and the divorce was filled with drama,” Adelle said.
