Winnie Odinga, the youngest daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, has recounted her father’s final moments.

Taking to her official Facebook page on the night of Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Winnie described the experience as both heartbreaking and transformative.

In her emotional tribute, she recalled how she held Raila’s hand in his final moments, noting that she had felt the weight of his legacy and love in his silence.

“Today, my world stands still. A giant has rested. I held his hand in his final moments, and in his silence, I felt the weight of his legacy and love. A father, a mentor, a compass. My heart is broken, but his light will forever guide me,” Winnie wrote.

A Daughter’s Final Goodbye

Winnie was part of the team that had travelled with Raila to India, where he was undergoing treatment before the sad news of his passing broke out.

Her heartfelt words offer an intimate glimpse into the Odinga family’s final farewell to a man who defined Kenya’s democratic journey for over five decades.

Known for their close bond, Winnie and her father shared a deep relationship that went beyond politics — one rooted in mentorship, mutual respect, and love.

Often seen together at political rallies and international forums, Winnie emerged as one of Raila’s most trusted allies and fiercest defenders in recent years.

Her latest message, however, captures the raw emotion of a daughter mourning not just a global icon, but her lifelong guide.

Raila mourned

Raila, Kenya’s second prime minister and one of Africa’s most enduring political figures, passed away earlier on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India.

His death has plunged the nation into mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and vigils held across the country.

President William Ruto led the nation in paying tribute to Odinga, describing him as “a statesman whose courage and vision redefined Kenya’s political landscape.”

Across the continent, African leaders and global dignitaries have also sent condolence messages, honouring Odinga’s decades-long fight for democracy, human rights, and social justice.
