Willis Otieno slams MPs over visit to Mosop lawmaker in Dallas, US

Outspoken constitutional lawyer Willis Otieno has lashed out at Members of Parliament over reports that several Kenyan legislators have travelled to the United States to visit Mosop MP Abraham Kirwa, who is currently residing in Dallas, Texas.
His remarks echo growing frustrations about absentee legislators, especially those who appear more invested in personal comfort than in serving the electorate.
In a statement on his X account on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Otieno questioned the logic and ethics behind an elected representative abandoning his constituents in Kenya to live abroad, while fellow lawmakers appear unbothered by his absence.
“So let me get this straight: a Kenyan MP, elected by the people of Mosop, has relocated to Dallas as if his constituency is in Texas?” Otieno wrote.
Otieno questioned how an elected representative could abandon his constituents in Mosop and comfortably relocate abroad, while fellow MPs chose to celebrate the move rather than demand accountability.
He criticised the visiting lawmakers for turning what should be a matter of public concern into what appeared to be a social call, saying their actions insulted the voters who entrusted Kirwa with leadership.

Otieno accused the visiting MPs of turning a blind eye to accountability and choosing instead to celebrate their colleague’s apparent desertion of his parliamentary duties.
“Our MPs are proudly flying there to ‘visit’ him in his American mansion, instead of asking how their colleague abandoned the very wananchi who sent him to Parliament,” he added.
The lawyer has reignited debate over the responsibilities of public servants and the use of public resources, particularly at a time when many parts of the country, including Mosop, are grappling with poverty, poor infrastructure, and limited access to services.
Otieno struck a chord with many Kenyans who feel increasingly disconnected from their elected leaders.
He called on the Parliamentary Service Commission and the Speaker of the National Assembly to clarify whether Kirwa’s extended stay in the U.S. is sanctioned and whether public funds were used for the MPs’ trip.
