Wetang’ula urges Maraga to refrain from activism amid security withdrawal claims

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged former Chief Justice David Maraga to restrain his participation in protests, stating that the act diminished the stature of his previous job.
Speaking on the matter on Friday, June 27, 2025, during an empowerment initiative in Webuye East, Wetang’ula noted that the involvement of Maraga in the recent protest was unnecessary.
“During the Mama Mboga Empowerment Forum held at Lukusi Primary School in Webuye East, I took the opportunity to address an issue of great concern involving Chief Justice Emeritus Hon. David Maraga,” Wetang’ula said in a statement.
Unnecessary participation
“I have respectfully urged Justice Maraga to refrain from engaging in activities that diminish the stature of the prestigious office he once held. His recent involvement in the Gen Z demonstrations in Nairobi was, in my view, unfortunate and unnecessary.”
He advised the former Chief Justice to focus his energy on being a role model for the youth, noting that the protests descended into violence, destruction of property and looting.

“As a learned friend whom I greatly respect, I believe Justice Maraga should serve as a role model for our youth that even in the agitation of their rights, the law must be adhered to,” Wetang’ula observed.
“His participation in protests that later degenerated into looting and lawlessness not only undermined his dignity but also sent the wrong message to a generation looking up to him for guidance and inspiration.”
“I have called on him to desist from taking advantage of innocent young people to push personal or political agendas.”
Instability in the country
The speaker indicated that Kenyans should pull together with the instability that is facing the country, and that all rights must be exercised with a degree of responsibility.
“At a time when the country is grappling with instability, we must all act with restraint and responsibility — especially those of us who hold or have held positions of high public trust,” he said.

The remarks come after Maraga revealed that his security detail had been withdrawn over what he said was his participation in the Gen Z protest.
On 25th June 2025, the day I joined the youth and families of the victims who died and those who went missing from the events of a year ago, one of the officers attached to me was asked not to report for duty but instead go and make a routine (monthly) entry in the firearm register,” Maraga said.
“On arrival that morning, he was suddenly informed of a training that was to take place on the same day. The following day, on 26th June 2025, I was informed that the rest of the security officers had been asked to report to their stations without any further information,” he stated.
