Maraga’s security withdrawn after appearance in June 25 protests

Former Chief Justice and presidential hopeful David Maraga has decried the withdrawal of his security personnel a day after he participated in the Wednesday, June 25, 2025, protests in Nairobi.
The emeritus chief justice confirmed the development via a letter written on his X page on Friday, June 27, 2025, stating that his security details were recalled on Thursday, June 26, 2025, and asked to report to their respective stations without any explanation given to him.
“As you may well know, the benefits of a retired chief justice are provided for and protected under Section 5A… Since my retirement on 12th January 2021, I have had the services of armed guards and police drivers, whom I requested from the National Police Service and was granted, as per the provisions of the Act cited above.
“However, on 25th June 2025, the day I joined the youth and families of the victims who died and those who went missing from the events of a year ago, one of the officers attached to me was asked not to report for duty but instead go and make a routine (monthly) entry in the firearm register. On arrival that morning, he was suddenly informed of a training that was to take place on the same day. The following day, on 26th June 2025, I was informed that the rest of the security officers had been asked to report to their stations without any further information,” he said.
His critical stance
In the letter addressed to Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, the former CJ has attributed the withdrawal to his critical stance against the current administration.
“It is within the public knowledge that I have spoken out, on several occasions, against the manner in which the Police have carried out investigations into the controversial circumstances surrounding the murder of Albert Ojwang while in police custody. I specifically called for the arrest and prosecution of senior police officers who were mentioned in connection with the murder. I have enjoyed the services of the officers attached in my office for almost five years now, uninterrupted. It is curious that they were suddenly recalled after my public criticism of the police leadership and my participation in the Nairobi CBD March on 25 June 2025.”
The former CJ has, however, affirmed his entitlement to security as provided by the constitution, as he called for the immediate reinstatement of the same.

“I wish to remind the leadership of the police and the Ministry of Interior and National Administration that the security arrangements and other facilitation by the National Police Service are benefits guaranteed under the Constitution and the law. It is on this basis that I demand the immediate restoration of my security,” he demanded.
His plea comes after his appearance in Wednesday’s demos sparked wide condemnation, with Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei and Homa Bay town MP among those who criticised his presence.
Shollei came out to publicly castigate the CJ on Thursday, June 26, 2025, while making a statement on the floor of the house.
