National Assembly Speaker Moses Masika Wetang’ula has called on Kenyans to turn out in large numbers to support Harambee Stars’ CHAN 2024 match against Morocco on Sunday, August 7, 2025.

The Speaker, who attended the match at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Thursday night, August 7, 2025, appealed to Kenyans after Harambee Stars’ spirited 1-1 draw against Angola, a match witnessed by over 46,000 fans, including the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, several parliamentarians and Cabinet secretaries.

In a statement shared on the National Assembly’s official social media channels, Wetang’ula said that the national team kept hopes alive of progressing to the next stage of the month-long continental tournament, despite being reduced to ten men following a first-half red card.

“I was among the 46,000-plus fans who thronged the new-look Kasarani to cheer the boys whose spirited fight after one player was given matching orders by the referee enabled Kenya to bag a point,” the statement reads.

“Despite being reduced to a 10-man after a red card in the first half, the Kenyan side delivered a valiant performance that thrilled the home crowd and kept their hopes of advancing in the month-long tournament alive.”

Additionally, the speaker commended the national team for their determination, resilience, and tactical discipline, saying the national team players had done the country proud.

“The boys have done us proud. It was an action-packed match that kept us on the edge of our seats. The tension was real as we couldn’t wait for the final whistle,” the statement reads.

The match had everything: goals, a red card, VAR controversy, and relentless energy from both sides as they chased a spot in the knockout stage.

But Kenya responded swiftly. Just four minutes later, the referee pointed to the spot after a foul. Austin Odhiambo stepped up and confidently converted the penalty in the 11th minute, his second goal of the tournament, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

The momentum seemed to be swinging in Kenya’s favour until the 21st minute, when midfielder Marvin Nabwire received a straight red card following a VAR review. Initially booked with a yellow for a reckless tackle on Angola’s Além, the decision was upgraded to a red, reducing Kenya to ten men for the rest of the match.

Wetang’ula also lauded the Kenyan fans who packed the stadium, praising their energy and unity in backing the team during the tense encounter.

“The fans were the real stars of the day. Their energy electrified the stadium, pushing the team to fight until the last minute. They won the hearts of football lovers across the continent,” the statement reads in part.
