The National Environment Management Authority (Nema)  has vowed to intensify the crackdown on factories emitting effluent  and dangerous chemicals in Nairobi River.

Yesterday, Nema  closed  down the Athi River-based Associated Battery Manufacturers  company.

In a dramatic raid led by Nema acting director-general Mamo Boru Mamo, the inspection team arrested the firm’s operations manager Eng Boniface Okello who they said will be required to explain why the company had not complied despite being ordered to do so early this year.

“The waste discharged from this factory, poses high risks to the community. Some of the chemicals discharged if consumed by people can easily kill. But I want to assure you that we will not allow this to happen anymore,” he said.

He said agency was also looking for the director Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company for allegedly allowing the battery company to operate while knowing it had not complied with waste management regulations.

He said the raids would continue until all companies which pollute the environment have been brought to book.

Biggest pollutants

On Wednesday, Nema officials raided East African Processing Zone Authority where top officials escaped arrest.

Nema said the garment maker is one of the biggest pollutants of Nairobi River.

Also this week, the authority closed down milk company, Sameer Agriculture and Livestock, which packs Daima milk, for discharging untreated waste to Nairobi River.

So far, it has closed down more than 50 companies.

Nema has also challenged Nairobi County government to come on board and help during the inspection tours.
