Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has been forced to endure a hostile reception within his home turf of Kiambu County during President William Ruto’s Mt Kenya tour.

Ichung’wah was among the political leaders who accompanied the head of state in addressing a handful of citizens along Mau Mau Road, Lari, Kiambu, on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

However, things took a different turn after Ruto handed the microphone to Ichung’wah, who was the last person to speak at Lari. The Kikuyu Member of Parliament was greeted by wild heckles and jeers immediately after standing on top of the car to address them.

From a State House Kenya live stream, the residents were seen throwing their hands in their air, showing their disapproval of Ichung’wah’s recognition, while others were recorded shouting him down.

Despite the unwelcoming reception, Ichung’wah remained bullish and appreciated the head of state for launching several projects in the region.

Nataka nikuambie ile kazi ya Kiambu, out of the Housing Fund, ile pesa tumeeka Kiambu is a total of Ksh46 billion na tunakushukuru na tunakuambia uendelee na hio kazi,” Ichung’wah said amid wild jeers.

Kazi ya kelele isikuwe uwoga hata kidogo kwa sababu ile kazi tulikupea ni ile ya maendeleo,” he added.

Which loosely translates to: “I want to thank you for what you are doing here in Kiambu; out of the Housing Fund, you have allocated Ksh46 billion for this county, and I really thank and request you continue with that job,” Ichung’wah said amid wild jeers.

“This noise should not make you afraid because we have been given the work of advancing development,” he added.

Heckled in Ol Kalou

This was not his first encounter with a hostile crowd during Ruto’s Mt Kenya tour. On Thursday, April 3, 2025, the discontented crowd openly protested Ichung’wah’s address with jeers and whistles.

In quick response, Ichung’wah insisted that he cannot be intimidated.

“Let me tell you. No one can shout me down. I cannot be intimidated,” Ichung’wah could be heard saying after the first round of heckling.

Despite the noise, Ichung’wah tried to weather the storm through a greeting, which was only met with louder jeers.

Other lawmakers have also been heckled in Mt Kenya region during President Ruto’s five-day tour.
