‘Misheveve’ no more as viral Chief Protus Wechuli retires

One of Kenya’s entertaining local administrators, Chief Protus Wechuli, popularly known as “Chief wa Misheveve,” has officially retired, marking the end of a colourful career in public service that blended community leadership with viral humour.
In a joyous retirement ceremony held on April 5, 2025, in Saboti, Trans Nzoia County, citizens from all walks of life came together to celebrate the charismatic administrator whose unique communication style earned him nationwide popularity.

Among the dignitaries in attendance was DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, who took to social media to pay tribute to Wechuli.
“One of the most popular chiefs in Kenya, Mr. Wechuli, AKA ‘Misheveve,’ retired today and was celebrated by Kenyans from all walks of life for his distinguished service. What a joyous day in Saboti, Trans Nzoia County! Hongera, my friend!” Wamalwa wrote on his X account.

Wechuli’s rise to fame
Wechuli shot to national fame following a now-iconic video in which he humorously narrated a domestic dispute involving a son who became enraged after being served pumpkin leaves (misheveve) instead of his preferred African kales (Sarat).
The son’s outrage led to a scuffle, prompting the chief to deliver an animated narration filled with local idioms and exaggerated expressions.
“Alianza kwa kutafuna mzee vidole kama omena,” Wechuli famously described, leaving Kenyans in stitches.
Although the video was recorded back in 2008, it resurfaced online years later, turning Wechuli into an internet sensation and endearing him to millions for his raw storytelling skills, relatability, and comedic timing.

In a past media interview, he revealed that the clip was part of a regular community baraza and was never intended to go viral.
Beyond this famous incident, Chief Wechuli rose to fame once again when he theatrically introduced Trans Nzoia Agriculture County Executive Committee member Phanice Khatundi with characteristic flair, describing her as “kitovu chetu cha Trans Nzoia County,” (Our navel) while using colourful language to describe her outfit.
Throughout his career, Wechuli transformed from a viral sensation into a respected community leader whose engaging barazas (public meetings) effectively addressed local issues while maintaining his signature wit and warmth.

While details about his retirement plans remain unknown, “Chief wa Misheveve” leaves behind a legacy defined not just by his position, but by his unmistakable voice, charisma, and the laughter he brought to the nation.
