DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa has issued a strong warning to President William Ruto over Kenya’s involvement in the Haiti mission, signalling that the United Opposition will closely follow up on unaccounted resources and alleged misuse of funds.

Speaking during Martha Karua’s People’s Liberation Party special national delegation on Friday, September 26, 2025, Wamalwa criticised the government for going ahead with the deployment despite court rulings that had declared it unconstitutional and unlawful.

Wamalwa said that he and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka were among the first Kenyans to question the legality of sending troops to Haiti.

He noted that the government’s decision to proceed disregarded court orders and that the mission, in his view, has now become an illegitimate operation for which Ruto has been left solely responsible.

Earlier, Kalonzo called on the government to withdraw Kenyan police officers from Haiti, citing underfunding and the high risks involved.

“Kalonzo and I were the first Kenyans to question the legality of the Haiti mission because President William Ruto’s government went against court orders that declared the deployment unconstitutional and unlawful. They went ahead and deployed troops regardless, and that mission has now become an illegitimate operation, with Ruto left holding it alone,” he said.

Highlighting the international context, Wamalwa pointed out that US President Donald Trump recently discussed numerous global issues that concern the US, but Haiti was never a priority.

He questioned why Kenya committed troops and resources, noting that over Ksh2 billion of taxpayers’ money went into the mission, while the USD200 million provided by the American government has not been accounted for.

“I watched former US President Trump speak on many global issues, and Haiti was not one of them. Why did Ruto go out of his way to commit our troops and resources, with over 2 billion shillings of taxpayers’ money spent, while 200 million USD given by the American government for the mission remains unaccounted for?”

More conditions

As the Haiti mission comes to an end, Wamalwa demanded that Ruto bring back Kenyan officers immediately.

He also called for the United Nations to take over and establish a multinational peacekeeping force to continue operations in Haiti, insisting that a proper forensic audit of the entire mission be conducted.

Wamalwa claimed that Ruto and his associates may have misappropriated funds during the deployment, warning that the United Opposition would not let the matter rest and would pursue accountability on behalf of the Kenyan people.

“Today, as the mission ends, we are demanding that Ruto does the honourable thing and brings our officers back home. The United Nations should take over and establish a multinational peacekeeping force to elevate the mission. However, even if they do, a proper forensic audit must be conducted, because we believe Ruto and his cronies misappropriated funds. As the United Opposition, we will not let this lie; we will follow up for the people of Kenya,” Wamalwa said.
