Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen engaged in a sharp exchange with a police officer during a public meeting in Migori, raising questions about conduct and supervision within the service.

The interaction took place on Thursday, September 11, 2025, in the presence of county officials and members of the public, when Murkomen asked the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) to stand and respond to a series of questions.

Questions over officer’s state

“Simama, kwa nini unakubaliana na kila kitu? Umetoka police station gani? Uko na challenges ya pombe huko? How are you handling it? Na mkileta hiyo pombe kwa police station, huwa mnakunywa exhibit?”

Translated as ‘Stand up’. Why are you agreeing to everything? Which police station are you from? Do you have challenges with alcohol there? How are you handling it? And when you bring alcohol to the police station, do you drink the exhibits?) Murkomen asked.

The OCS responded by stating, “No, we do not do that, sir,” when asked about alcohol exhibits.

Murkomen continued, questioning how the officer would provide leadership. “Sasa bwana OCS, utasupervise aje officers chini yako kama unakuja kwa mkutano kama umelewa?” (Now, OCS, how will you supervise the officers under you if you come to a meeting in this state?) he said.

The officer explained that he was unwell. “Ni homa, sir. Niko na mafua inanisumbua.” (It is the flu, Sir. I have a cold that is disturbing me.)

Murkomen then remarked, “Chenye inakusumbua ni mapua? Haya county commander, you know what to do.” (What is disturbing you is your nose? Alright, county commander, you know what to do.)

The Cabinet Secretary’s comments were directed to the Migori County Police Commander, who was present at the meeting. He instructed the commander to take appropriate steps regarding the matter.

The exchange drew attention to the standards expected during official functions and the role of senior officers in maintaining decorum.

Murkomen’s remarks placed responsibility on the chain of command, highlighting the expectation that those in leadership must remain exemplary before their juniors.

As the conversation ended, the CS handed over the matter to the county commander’s leadership for follow-up.
