Uhuru hails Bishop Philip Sulumeti’s legacy of humility and service

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined the Catholic faithful and Kenyans at large in mourning the passing of Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega who died on Sunday night, November 9, 2025.

In a statement released by the Office of the 4th President of Kenya on Monday, November 10, 2025, Kenyatta described Bishop Sulumeti as a devoted servant of God and a pillar of faith whose life was defined by humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to service.

Kenyatta said the late bishop stood out as a moral compass and peacemaker who tirelessly worked to uplift communities through his ministry.

“Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega is a devoted servant of God and a pillar of faith whose life was defined by humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to service,” Uhuru stated.

He added that the bishop’s decades-long service in the Church left a lasting mark on Kenya’s faith and moral fabric.

“ Bishop was a moral compass and peacemaker who touched countless lives through his ministry and steadfast dedication to uplifting communities,” The former head of state noted.

A Legacy of Faith

Bishop Philip Sulumeti, born in 1939, was ordained a priest in 1966 for the Diocese of Kisumu. When the Diocese of Kakamega was established in 1978, he became its first bishop, a position he held until his retirement in 2014.

Throughout his episcopal ministry, he championed education, social development, and pastoral care, founding numerous parishes, schools, and health institutions across Western Kenya.

Reflecting on his passing, the former Head of State expressed his condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega, the clergy, and the faithful.

“Bishop Sulumeti’s legacy of faith, unity, and love will remain deeply etched in the hearts of all who knew him,” Kenyatta said.
