Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has called for an end to bodaboda riders’ ‘harassment’ saying only rogue ones should be dealt with.
Raila said a mistake by a few riders should not affect the whole sector.
“There was an incidence in Nairobi where a woman was attacked by bodaboda operators, we must all condemn such but let not all riders ( in the sector) pay for the crime of others,” the former Prime Minister said.
His remarks come two days after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a nationwide crackdown on bodaboda operators after a Zimbabwean diplomat was attacked by a group of people on Forest Road after she accidentally hit a bodaboda rider.
“Whoever did that should face the law. It should not be a blanket condemnation of the entire sector. Police should not harass all riders for a sin of others,” Raila added.
A video of the incident went viral and it captured the attention of the authorities in the transport sector.
While addressing bodaboda stakeholders at KICC on Wednesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i said the government will issue fresh smart riding licenses for bodaboda operators.
“This will allow us to weed out criminals in the sector,” Matiang’i said.
