Six people have died following a road accident at Green Estate, near Shiners Boys High School, along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

The accident was a head-on collision involving a 14-seater North Rift matatu that was heading to Nakuru and a lorry heading to Nairobi.

The accident happened a few minutes to 7:00 pm.

The lorry reportedly lost control and rammed into a matatu head-on.

Five of the occupants of the matatu died on the spot while one person breathed his last in the hospital. The matatu driver also died.

Two people who were injured including the lorry driver, are admitted to Nakuru Level 5 Hospital.

Nakuru Police Commander Beatrice Kiraguri confirmed the incident and claimed it is the lorry driver who was at fault.

“It appears like the lorry driver lost control and hit the matatu. We have observed that the matatu driver tried as much as he could to dodge the lorry but it appeared impossible to escape the accident,” Kiraguri said.

North Rift Sacco operator David Kinyanjui told the press that the scene of the accident shows that the lorry driver was on the wrong side.

“If you check how the lorry is and compare it to our vehicle, then you can confirm that our driver attempted to avoid the accident but he was blocked by the bridge rail guard,” Kinyanjui said.
