ODM Secretary-General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has criticised Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his controversial remarks about the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying that even in the face of provocation, Raila would have responded with compassion rather than hate.

In a post shared on his official X account on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Sifuna described Kahiga as “easily the vilest of the bunch,” referring to statements that many have called insensitive and divisive.

Sifuna added that while there are people who openly dislike Raila, his legacy of unity and forgiveness should guide Kenyans. “Baba taught us to always respond with love.”

He reminded Kenyans that the late leader’s forgiving nature was unmatched. “If he were still around, the next thing you would see is him having lunch with Kahiga,” he stated, highlighting Raila’s capacity to rise above personal grievances.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s rebuttal comes after his controversial remarks, which many interpreted as celebrating the death of the late Raila Odinga.

Speaking in Kikuyu during a burial ceremony in Nyeri, Kahiga suggested Raila’s death was “God’s intervention” amid confusion in heaven .

He implied that the Mt Kenya region had been sidelined due to Raila’s close ties with President William Ruto and claimed that divine power had “levelled the playing field” politically.

The remarks sparked outrage among leaders across the country.

The Council of Governors (CoG), led by Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, described them as reckless, while ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga characterised them as primitive and divisive.

UDA Chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire said the statements were careless and disrespectful. Raila Odinga’s younger sister, Ruth Odinga, expressed her shock on Facebook, calling the comments shameful.
