The Orange Democratic Movement Party has officially condemned Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his controversial remarks regarding the death of the late ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga.

Through a post on X on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the party said it was praying for Governor Kahiga and asked God to forgive him for his insensitive comments.

“In this period of mourning, following the loss of our Party Leader Raila Odinga, we wish to pray for the Governor of Nyeri, Mutahi Kahiga, that God forgives him for the utterances he made on the passing of our leader,” ODM posted.

Gladys Wanga reacts to Kahiga

In the same breath, ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also strongly condemned Kahiga, describing his remarks as primitive and divisive.

“Shame on you, Kahiga. For three consecutive days before his sudden death, Raila Odinga expressed shock at the capacity of human beings to be evil and heartless,” Wanga wrote on X.

She said Kahiga’s statements were not only disrespectful to Raila’s memory but also an attack on the Luo community.

“Kahiga has long thrived on bursts of false allegations, personal insults, fear mongering and ethnic profiling, especially when it comes to the Luo nation and Raila Odinga.

“Still, none of his past public outbursts have been as primitive, insensitive and insulting as what he said today about Raila, the Luo nation and the sharing of the national cake,” she stated.

Wanga called on all leaders to condemn Kahiga’s remarks, adding that tribal chauvinism has no place in Kenya’s unity.

“It is time for all who value the unity of this country to take a stand and condemn this depth of tribal hate being championed by Kahiga.

“We all have a duty to call out Kahiga and demand that he appreciates that Kenya belongs to all. Kahiga’s sentiments are way off our values and aspirations as a nation,” she said.

Kahiga’s controversial remarks

Speaking in Nyeri, Governor Kahiga said it was “God’s plan” that Raila Odinga had died.

“You guys can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us,” said Kahiga.

He added, “Who is God? Does he take ugali at somebody’s house or sleep in Kayole?

“He came through in His own way. He saw up there that people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smooth things up there.”

His comments have drawn nationwide outrage, with calls for his resignation from the Council of Governors leadership.
