The Senate session on Wednesday, 14, 2025, turned chaotic after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna clashed with Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot.

The two lawmakers exchanged harsh words on the floor, forcing the Speaker to repeatedly intervene in an attempt to restore order.

The drama unfolded after Sifuna rose to contribute to a critical matter before the House. However, his efforts were met with constant interruptions and heckling from Senator Cheruiyot.

A frustrated Sifuna protested the Majority Leader’s conduct, accusing him of deliberately disrupting his speech and undermining decorum in the chamber.

“Mr Speaker, throw him out!” Sifuna shouted, visibly angry. “Why are you heckling us? This is not your house. Allow us to speak. You can’t heckle us all the time!”

While standing on the floor, Sifuna pleaded with the Speaker to intervene and asked for ample time to articulate his points, which he said were of national importance.

He also slammed Cheruiyot for behaving as if the Senate belonged to him, reminding him that the chamber operates under rules that should be respected by all members.

The Speaker tried to calm the situation by urging Cheruiyot to allow the Nairobi senator to be heard in silence. However, Cheruiyot was unrelenting and continued engaging Sifuna in a verbal exchange.

At one point, the Kericho senator told Sifuna that he should show respect to him because he is younger than him, implying that age should be a factor in determining seniority. But Sifuna firmly dismissed that notion.

“In this House, Mr Speaker, there is nothing like seniority coming from how old you are. It is about what’s in your brains, not your age,” Sifuna said. “You can’t come here claiming to be senior and then go ahead and heckle us.”

He went on to question why no disciplinary action was being taken against Senator Cheruiyot, claiming that if the roles were reversed and he was the one interrupting, he would have already been thrown out of the chamber. He accused the speaker of showing bias in handling the matter.

Sifuna concluded by revealing that he was exercising restraint because his party leader, Raila Odinga, had recently advised him to be calm and a little bit nice.

“If it wasn’t for that, I would have dealt with the Kericho senator differently,” he warned.

The Senate session eventually proceeded, but tension remained high between the two lawmakers.
