A Form 4 student who stole Sh331,000 from a police officer sacco account to build himself a house has been charged.
The student, 17-year-old Gideon Rotich from Ngito Secondary School in Kipsigis who sat for his KCSE exam this year has been arraigned and charged at Milimani Law Courts with one count of stealing.
Particulars of the offence are that on July 30, 2020 and 2nd september 2020 within the republic of Kenya the form 4 student stole Sh331,850 from Nicholas Koech.
According to the police report,the policer officer Nicholas Koech stationed in Garissa county had gone to a nearby ATM to withdraw some money for his own use when he realised that the balance was lower at Sh5000 than he had expected ,he noticed that the sum of Sh360,000 had been stolen from his police sacco account by unknown people.
He immediately visited the police sacco offices where he lodged a complaint and requested for the statement of the account,he established that a safaricom line had been used to withdraw money from his account from 30th July to 2nd September 2020.
On September 2, 2020 he reported the matter at central police station,investigations were carried out and a 47-year-old mother of Gideon Rotich was arrested who confessed that she used her Identification card to register a safaricom line for her son which had been used for the theft.
Sarah Chelangat told police that in June 2020 her son Gideon had told her that he had won money while doing betting games,he also informed her that he had received a message from Kenya Police SACCO informing him that he had some money in the sacco account.
Sarah continues to say that her son did not disclose the amount but he withdraw the money in intervals for his own use,she claims the son also wanted to build a house at their home but her husband declined and her son left home.
The mother says when her son exhausted the money he came back home but he was not staying at their home but at relatives.
She says on the month of September 2020 she received a phone call from an unknown person claiming that he was a police officer and that a safaricom line registered with my ID had been used to withdraw his money from Kenya Police SACCO and that he had lost his previous Safaricom line,at that time her son had disappeared from home and his mobile phone switched off.
The police officer Nicholas Koech claims that the line used by the student belonged to him and he had registered M-banking before he lost it and acquired a new one.
Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi released the minor on Sh50,000 or bond Sh100,000,the magistrate ordered the police to detain him at central police station until his parents prove to court he is a minor, the matter to be mentioned on monday 3rd May 2021.
