The University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) has announced mass demonstrations on all its campuses over increased tuition and accommodation fees.

In a memo signed by Secretary-General Nathan Kiplagat, UNSA said the mass demonstrations will begin on Monday, September 20.

“There will be mass demonstrations in all University of Nairobi Campuses beginning from Monday 20th September 2021,” the statement by UNSA read in part.

“Deliberations with the University of Nairobi administration on the increment of both school fees and accommodation fees have collapsed,” it added.

Through the MEMO, the students association further warned first-year parents and students from reporting to campus on the said date.

“In that regard, all first-year parents and students who are to report to the University on that date (September 20) are advised not to report to the University,” the MEMO stated.

In July, UoN increased tuition fees for some of its courses in order to make ends meet following a cash deficit after a shortfall in student enrollment.

An earlier spot check on the new fees structure of the university by K24 Digital revealed that the UoN doubled fees for some of its postgraduate courses and self-sponsored programs.

For instance, fees for a masters degree in communication which runs for two years was raised from Ksh275,000 to over Ksh600,000.

Fees for degree courses like law, bachelor of commerce and economics under the self-sponsored program have been raised to about Ksh1 million.
