Senator Nyutu: I was making more money before joining politics

Murang’a County Senator Joe Nyutu has revealed that his income was far higher before he joined politics, noting that despite the financial downgrade, he remains content with his decision to serve in public office, as it is more of a calling to him

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Thursday, November 6, 2025, Nyutu reflected on how his earlier business ventures provided him with a much better financial standing compared to his current life in politics.

He said he does not regret joining the political space but admitted that his earnings were significantly better before taking up his current role.

“I do not regret being in politics. However, I can honestly say that I was doing much better financially when I was running my businesses before I joined politics. Right now, I am far below where I used to be in terms of income,” Nyutu said.

He revealed that during his business years, he enjoyed greater financial stability and independence, but after stepping into politics, he found that the rewards were more about purpose and service than money.

“But being in politics is a calling, not a way to make money,” Nyutu said.

The Senator further cautioned young and aspiring leaders against joining politics with the expectation of becoming rich, noting that the political field, especially at the senatorial level, is not a guaranteed source of wealth.

He explained that many people get disappointed after discovering that leadership demands sacrifice, commitment, and service beyond financial gains.

He maintained that politics is a calling that demands passion and resilience, not greed for material gain.

“I would also like to tell those who are aspiring to join politics, especially the Senate, that they should not do it for money. I want to assure them that there is no money to be made there,” Nyutu shared.

Hobbies

Away from politics, Senator Nyutu shared some personal details about his lifestyle and interests.

He revealed that he does not have many hobbies but deeply enjoys working out and doing aerobics at the gym, describing it as one of his ways to stay physically and mentally fit amidst the pressures of political life.

He also shared that he dedicates much of his free time to church activities, noting that his faith remains a key part of his life and routine.

According to the Senator, Sunday is his favourite day of the week, a time when he finds peace and fulfilment through worship and reflection.

“When it comes to hobbies, I do not have many, but I really enjoy working out and doing aerobics at the gym. I also take part in church activities quite often, and Sunday is my favourite day of the week,” he said.

Nyutu also revealed that black is his favourite colour, explaining that he finds it simple, powerful, and elegant, a reflection of how he chooses to approach life and leadership.

“My favourite colour is black,” Nyutu added.
