Senator Methu: 200 police officers were deployed at JKIA to arrest Gachagua

Nyandarua Senator Methu Muhia has said that at least 200 police officers were deployed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to arrest Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking during a brief stopover of the convoy at the Airtel area near Ole Sereni on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Methu revealed that the efforts by the police officers to nab Gachagua were, however, thwarted by supporters who had thronged the country’s largest airport.

“I want to sincerely thank the people of Nairobi for standing with us because at the airport, there were at least 200 police officers deployed to arrest Rigathi Gachagua, but you stood your ground as the foot soldiers of Gachagua,” Methu said.

Arrest threats

The remarks come just days after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen threatened to arrest Gachagua over comments he made while in the US on the collusion between the Kenyan government and the Al Shabaab.

Murkomen had equally indicated that Gachagua’s absence from Kenya had resulted in relative peace and tranquility.

“There are so many people landing in the country; why should we be worried about one person?” Murkomen stated.

Further adding, “In the last few weeks or a month, when he has not been around, the country has been very peaceful.”

Police on standby

Similarly, the Interior CS noted that the security agencies are ready in the case of a chaotic environment upon his arrival, which is expected to be on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

“And so, you have a point that perhaps the security agencies should be prepared for a more chaotic environment as a result of his arrival back in the country,” Murkomen said.

“I wish Kenya remained peaceful like it was in the past four weeks,” he added.

Gachagua’s convoy to the city was attacked by goons along Mombasa Road as it snaked its way before police lobbed teargas to disperse the groups.

In the melee, several cars, including those of journalists and leaders who had gone to show solidarity with Gachagua, were vandalized.

Several journalists were also injured in the confrontation which saw some of their equipment destroyed by the goons.
