Salasya defends Luhya’s work ethic, says they’d rather do manual jobs than remain idle

Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has highlighted that the Luhya people are known for their strong work ethic, arguing that hard work often matters more than formal qualifications.
Taking to his official social media channels on Thursday, July 10, 2025, Salasya emphasised that Luhya people are not hesitant or selective when it comes to work within their ability.
He argued they would rather take on jobs such as maids, grave diggers, or watchmen than remain idle or addicted to alcohol consumption around the clock.
Luhya community, we are not choosy and selective; we work with what is within our power to sustain our families, unlike others. I would rather be a maid, a grave digger or a watchman than be idle and choose to be a 24/7 drunkard,” Salasya said.
The youthful parliamentarian also praised all Luhyas present for their hard work and added that if someone meets a Luhya man or woman outside of his crowd, they can trust that person to be diligent. He emphasised that hard work is not a curse but a blessing.
“Let me appreciate all Luhya in the house for being hard-working. Any woman or a man outside here, if you happen to meet a Luhya for a wife or husband, trust him or her; they are hard-working. Hard work is not a curse, it’s a blessing,” he added.

Salasya on doing manual jobs
This comes after he opened up about the challenging manual jobs he undertook before emerging victorious in Parliament.
In a candid post shared on his official X account on Thursday, July 10, 2025, he shared a throwback photo of himself digging on a farm and revealed that he used to do manual work to sustain himself back in 2019.
The youthful parliamentarian, in addition, said that he always feels bad when people look down on others just because they are well off and consider maids, watchmen, and gravediggers’ jobs useless.

“Mimi ndio huyu 2019.Kazi ni kazi. I used to do manual work to sustain myself, now see. I always feel bad when someone looks down on others just because they are up there, and those maids, watchmen and grave diggers are useless to them,” Salasya revealed.
He added that people would despise those jobs because they had never been there and urged everyone to respect every hustle, even that of a toilet cleaner.
“You will despise those jobs because you were never there. Let us respect each hustle, even that of a toilet cleaner,” he added.
