Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has claimed that he was ambushed by armed individuals during his 2027 presidential campaign tour in Isiolo County, raising fears over his safety and escalating concerns about politically targeted intimidation.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Friday, May 17, 2025, Salasya said that masked men, whom he described as heavily armed and posing as police officers, intercepted his convoy along the Isiolo–Nanyuki Road.

He claimed the attackers disarmed his bodyguards, shot at his vehicle, and forced him into an unmarked car before taking him to an undisclosed location.

“They shot at my vehicle, aiming directly at me,” Salasya wrote.

“Shortly after, they emerged with at least 15 AK47 rifles and confronted me with a chilling message, one I cannot disclose at this time for security reasons.”

The MP said that one of his security officers managed to flee and helped him escape into a nearby bush for safety before he was eventually captured.

“I have not been mentioning the government in my rallies, and I have stayed true to my call for peace and progress. I urge all relevant authorities and the public to take note of what is happening,” he added.

Reports of abduction

A statement shared by his communication team shortly after the incident claimed that the convoy had been blocked by multiple unidentified vehicles and fired upon. The tires of Salasya’s car were shot and the vehicle immobilised.

“His bodyguards have been disarmed, and Salasya has been taken by force. This is a serious threat to his life, and immediate intervention is needed,” the statement read.

Near arrests series

This is not the first time the lawmaker has found himself in a tense encounter with unknown individuals claiming to be law enforcers. On Saturday, May 10, Salasya narrowly escaped what he termed an attempted abduction at a Mombasa hotel after residents intervened. The masked individuals—believed to be police—allegedly failed to identify themselves or produce an arrest warrant.

“Let it be clear, this was not an arrest. It was a criminal act disguised as law enforcement—an attack not just on me but on the democratic space of this nation,” he stated after the Mombasa incident.

Salasya has recently declared his intention to vie for the presidency in 2027 under a yet-to-be-launched political movement.

He has been touring various counties to drum up support, including visits to Malindi, Vihiga, Kakamega, Bungoma, and Busia.

No official statement had been issued by security agencies at the time of publication.
