Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson has promised to cater for the funeral expenses of the late Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody.

In a statement after meeting Ojwang’s family at the City Hall on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Sakaja promised to fund Ojwang’s child’s education and clear the outstanding college fees for Albert’s widow Nevinina Onyango, who is currently pursuing a course in community health.

“I have known Albert for a long time. If you go through his Facebook and Twitter you will see, he was a personal influencer, and we will walk with his family on this journey. We will take care of the burial expenses, educate his three-year-old son George Miles, and finish paying his widow’s college fees. This is important as we call for justice for this young man,” Sakaja stated.

“I am happy that Kenyan’s have come round to support the family and are contributing to a Paybill, the family has proposed that all those contributions be channeled to a Money Market Fund that will secure the child’s future instead of all being spent on an event.”

Sakaja has also promised to secure a job for the widow upon completion of her studies.

“Upon completing her training as a health worker, we shall ensure she gets a job in the county as she is in her last semester” Sakaja added.

Sakaja has also promised to mobilise friends to purchase a plot in Homa Bay and construct rental units for Albert’s parents to help them earn a living.

“We want justice for Albert, true justice. This little boy George is oblivious of what has happened to his father who he will never see again, we cannot go on this way as a country,” Sakaja added.

Ojwang was arrested on Friday, June 7, 2025, in Homa Bay and subsequently transferred to Nairobi, where he was booked into Central Police Station on Saturday, June 8, 2025.

On Monday, June 9, 2025, the OCS for Central Police Station Samson Talaam was interdicted alongside his deputy, Samuel Nganga, Charles Muriuki, Debian Lusweti, Evaline Kanyiri and Peter Kimani, who was the supervisor of the cells during the incident.

Postmortem results on June 10, 2025, indicated that Ojwang died from injuries to his head, neck and limbs, which were consistent with assault.

Responding to questions from senators on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Amin revealed that DCI officers handed over Albert safely to police officers at the Central Police Station, before later learning that the 31-year-old teacher had been killed, insisting that Talaam is the prime suspect.
