Ruto reveals details of private meeting with Raila after 2022 elections
President William Ruto has revealed that he held discussions with the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga a few months after the 2022 general elections.
Speaking on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) grounds in Bondo during Raila’s state funeral, Ruto said he looked for the late ODM leader to forge a working relationship since they had the same manifesto and he was Raila’s political student.

“I can now reveal here today that immediately, a few months after the elections, and there are witnesses seated here, I looked for Baba. Tukaketi chini na yeye, nikmwambia, mheshimiwa Prime Minister kwa umri mimi natoshan kuwa kijana wako kwa mapenzi ya Mungu mimi ndiye rais wa kenya Nikwamweleza mheshimiwa Raila kwa hii serikali nataka nikupatie mambo machache,” he disclosed.
His remarks come amid growing speculations over the future of the ODM Party and the broad-based pact after Raila’s death and the Head of State’s 2027 reelection plan.
While a section of Raila’s allies have committed to the pact and beyond 2027, some, like the ODM Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna, insist that they will follow Raila’s last public directive that the party should prepare to field a candidate.
It is, however, not clear whether the candidate will run for the country’s top seat or will be Ruto’s running mate in the upcoming general polls.
2027 was not on the table
However, Ruto has maintained that he promised to reward Raila for his long struggle for the country and his sacrifices, and that the 2027 equation was not part of the matrix, as it was the late prime minister’s choice.
“Nikamweleza kwamba kama utasimama 2027 kuwania urais ama kama utaunga mtu mkono mimi hainijalishi. Mimi nataka kama kijana wako, niliyejifunza siasa chini yako. Nataka nikusaidie kwa sababu wewe, you have made a huge sacrifice for our nation. You have made a huge personal and family sacrifice. I want to rewrite the wrongs they did to you,” Ruto said.
At the same time, ODM Deputy Party leader and Vihiga County Senator Godfrey Osotsi has urged President William Ruto to fulfil the implementation of the broad-based agreement that he made with the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“On March this year Baba Raila Odinga aliweka kidole kwa mkataba. Ten points agenda ambayo ni maswala ya wakenya. Mheshimiwa rais umesaidia ndugu yako vikubwa lakini Baba atakuwa na furaha sana kule binguni kama hiyo ten point agenda itakamilika vile alikuwa anataka,”he said.
“Na Baba mwenyewe alikuwa amesema tarehe ishini na sita march next year yale maswala kumi yawe yametekelezwa kwa hivyo rais. I know you have the ability, I know you have the capability and power, please make Baba happy in heaven.”
