Ruto receives international recognition during UNGA conference

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, revealed that President William Ruto received international recognition during the ongoing United Nations General Assembly conference in the United States.
Through his X handle, Mohamed mentioned that Ruto’s pet project, the Affordable Housing program, had attracted praise abroad.

He wrote that the President was recognised by UN-Habitat as the Global Champion of Adequate Housing for All.
Mohamed wrote, “President Ruto recognised by UN-Habitat as the Global Champion of Adequate Housing for All, in acknowledgement of Kenya’s leadership in tackling the challenge of inadequate housing.”

Call for action in New York
According to Mohamed, the recognition came as President Ruto took part in a high-level session on housing in New York.
He said the President used the platform to propose the creation of a new network.
“On the sidelines of the UNGA in New York, he has proposed a Coalition of Global Housing Champions,” Mohamed noted.
He added that the idea had already gained support. “The President brought together 25 countries, the UN, development partners, and local banks to adopt a historic Call for Action on Adequate and Affordable Housing,” he stated.
The move has been described by leaders as a major step in positioning Kenya at the centre of global conversations on decent housing.

Local endorsement
Back home, the program is also gaining momentum. Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya, speaking earlier, endorsed the Affordable Housing project, noting its impact in informal settlements.
He welcomed the planned second phase of housing units in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, expected to be handed over next month.
Gakuya said the project had given thousands of families dignity by moving them from shanties into modern units.
He urged Nairobi residents to support the initiative, describing it as both a social and economic game changer.
For President Ruto, the UN-Habitat award signals that the world is watching Kenya’s housing agenda, while leaders at home continue to rally communities around it.
