Gachagua’s staunch ally Gakuya now endorses Ruto’s Affordable Housing program

Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya, on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, in a 180-degree turn, endorsed the Affordable Housing Program in Mukuru Kwa Njenga ahead of the anticipated tour of President William Ruto next month.
Speaking during a public function, the MP, who has been a strong critic of the William Ruto-led government, softened his stance and said that if locals are benefiting from the program, it would be wrong to oppose it.

Gakuya told the crowd that good projects should be welcomed.
He explained, “Ni mzuri, kama mradi mzuri namna hii ukija tuupokee ili tusaidike sisi wenyewe.”
The MP stressed that housing plans must be done in a way that secures ownership for residents, not outsiders.
He added, “Ile ilani natoa ni kwamba vetting, zinafanya saa saba tusiletewe wageni kwa zile nyumba tunajenga ile umiliki uwe ni wetu wenyewe.”

The legislator, who has often opposed some of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s policies, said he will now stand with the housing project as long as locals are the main beneficiaries.
He noted, “Na tukienda na hiyo barabara, mimi nasema ya kwamba, kama nyinyi mnasaindika mimi nitaiunga mkono.”
Affordable Housing endorsement
Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege also spoke at the event, telling residents that the government agenda is clear, that the Affordable Housing program being undertaken in various parts of Kenya aims to do away with slums.
She said, “Agenda ji mo? Agenda ni moja. Agenda ni Shughuli za Boma Yangu.”
Chege dismissed critics who have been spreading negative information about the project, saying the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development is ready to answer questions and clear doubts.
“Kuna watu wamekua wakiskiza propaganda pale kwa barabara. The ministry is ready to clarify anything,” the MCA noted.
The endorsement by Gakuya is seen as a political shift, especially since President Ruto is expected to tour Mukuru Kwa Njenga phase two as part of his housing agenda campaign.
