Ruto meets Ethiopia’s PM Abiy Ahmed ahead of UN summit

President William Ruto has met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for bilateral talks ahead of the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4), which officially kicked off in Addis Ababa on Sunday, July 27, 2025.
In a statement shared on his X account on Sunday, July 27, 2025, Abiy Ahmed said he had received President Ruto for discussions that focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing regional issues of mutual interest.
He noted that the talks were timely as the continent works toward building resilient food systems, enhancing cooperation, and addressing shared challenges such as climate change and insecurity.
“Also received H.E. @WilliamsRuto, President of the Republic of Kenya, for bilateral talks ahead of the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit, which Ethiopia is co-hosting. Our discussions focused on bilateral relations as well as regional issues of mutual interest,” he said.
The high-level summit, co-hosted by Ethiopia and Italy, brings together world leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to assess progress in transforming global food systems to make them more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive. The summit runs from July 27 to 29 in the Ethiopian capital.
The UNFSS+4 Summit is a follow-up to the inaugural Food Systems Summit held in 2021. It aims to take stock of the global efforts made so far, address current challenges in food and nutrition security, and find common solutions to improve food systems, especially in developing nations.
President Ruto arrived in Ethiopia on Sunday evening and was received at Bole International Airport by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh.

The President was received at Bole International Airport by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh,” State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said in an official statement on X.

While in Addis, Ruto is expected to deliver Kenya’s national statement at the summit. His remarks will emphasise Kenya’s dedication to reshaping its food systems to support sustainable development and respond to the climate crisis.
“At the summit, he will deliver Kenya’s national statement, reaffirming the country’s commitment to transforming food systems to support sustainable development and enhance climate resilience,” the statement from State House added.
President Ruto’s trip also includes a series of high-level bilateral meetings with global leaders attending the summit.
“On the sidelines of the Summit, the President will hold bilateral talks with other leaders, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, among others,” Hussein Mohamed said.
