Deputy President (DP) William Ruto has responded to an attack by former vice-president, Kalonzo Musyoka, sparked by his comments on the latter’s ownership of a large farm in Yatta, Machakos County.

Through his spokesman, David Mugonyi, DP Ruto accused the Wiper Party leader of succumbing to cheap political hysterics in an attempt to “salvage his political mojo.”

“Kalonzo does not have confidence in his candidate. In his panic, he has saddled himself with a ridiculous heap of bizarre allegations in pursuit of Deputy President William Ruto. He must desist from the cheap tactics of trying to salvage his political mojo by attacking the Deputy President,” Mugonyi said.

Earlier, Kalonzo had taken issue with utterances the DP made in Bomet claiming that the former VP grabbed his Yatta Farm from the National Youth Service.

“The wild claims hold no water. The allegations are a cheap and a desperate attempt at character assassination. I uphold the highest moral and ethical standards in all my affairs. I have nothing to hide and I today challenge the authorities to open an investigation into this matter,” said Kalonzo in a fiery statement issued on Monday, January 18.

Mugonyi, without denying that Ruto made the claims, said a probe into how Kalonzo came into possession of the expansive farm would be in the best interest of the public.

That notwithstanding, Mugonyi tied Musyoka’s statement to panicking over the crowded Machakos Senate race in which he has fronted Agnes Kavindu as his party’s candidate.

Kavindu is the ex-wife of Ruto’s Ukambani new ally Johnson Muthama is facing several other candidates, including former Water minister and Mwala MP Mutua Katuku.

“The Machakos Senate contest will be decided by the people, on the ground. The candidates are known and the best among them will win,” said Mugonyi.
