‘Wanakula chakula ya wagonjwa’ – Kalonzo mocks heavy security guarding Tuju in hospital
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has decried the heavy security guarding Raphael Tuju as he recuperates in the hospital.
Kalonzo stated that three police officers have been assigned to guard Tuju in the hospital, terming it a waste of resources that could be reassigned elsewhere in the country.
The former Vice President, who addressed the press on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from a medical facility where Tuju is receiving medical attention, lamented that officers assigned to guard Tuju have resorted to eating food meant for patients at the facility, painting a clear picture of their plight during the assignment.
“Sasa ya nini hapa taxpayers’ money keeping three policemen. Tunashukuru Doctor Gikonyo kwa sababu anawapatia hata lunch; wanakula ile chakula ya wagonjwa,” Kalonzo remarked.

This loosely translates to: “What’s the need of spending taxpayers’ money keeping three officers here? In fact, we thank Doctor Gikonyo because he is giving them food; they are eating food meant for patients.”
Kalonzo addresses plight of police
Kalonzo emphasised that the police officers who are merely doing their duty are very hungry, remarking that it is a surprise that police officers have been reduced to surviving on the generosity of the medical facility where they have been deployed to guard the former Cabinet Secretary.
“Hawa policemen hapa, alituambia wazi jamaa wana njaa na hao wanafanya duty yao. Imagine askari ya police ambao mkubwa wao zaidi ni Ruto anakula chakula cha wagonjwa (We are informed that these policemen are very hungry. Imagine policemen whose most senior leader, Ruto, is eating food meant for patients,” he added.
The opposition leader maintained that they will stand by Tuju and use all legal channels in the fight to retain his property.
Health challenges
The wiper leader lamented that Tuju, who was a high-ranking government official having served in the cabinet of former presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta, is being treated as a terrorist as he fights to keep his property amid health challenges.
“Tuju is not a terrorist. The way he was handled yesterday in our presence showed nothing short of a terrorist attack on a Kenyan whose rights are well established in the constitution.

While responding to Ruto’s earlier remarks stating that Tuju needs honest friends, Kalonzo challenged Ruto to show real friendship in Tuju’s situation by ordering the withdrawal of police officers guarding Tuju.
He asserted that, contrary to Ruto’s claims, they are the true friends of Tuju who have come out to stand with him as he fights to save his property from the claws of a vicious vulture keen on grabbing the same.
