Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has called on President William Ruto to immortalise the late Phoebe Asiyo with a monument in Nairobi, hailing her as one of Kenya’s most dedicated champions of women’s rights and public service.

Speaking during Asiyo’s state funeral service on Friday, August 8, 2025, Raila said the former Karachuonyo MP left a legacy that should be preserved for generations.

Celebrating women’s trailblazer

Asiyo, who died on July 17, 2025, served as one of Kenya’s first elected female MPs and was instrumental in pushing for gender equality, social reforms, and community development. Raila described her as a fearless voice who broke political barriers and inspired women to take leadership roles at a time when female representation was rare.

“She fought for the rights of Kenyans. Also, when she was a Member of Parliament for Karachuonyo, she was one of the people who consoled me when my father died,” Raila said.

“I’m happy today that the government of President Ruto has allowed Phoebe to have the kind of funeral she deserves as a hero. And I want Mr President to follow it up by dedicating a monument in Nairobi for Phoebe Asiyo because she has done what many have failed to do.”

United in final farewell

The funeral, attended by national leaders, clergy, and community members, reflected Asiyo’s cross-generational influence. President Ruto, who had earlier directed the state to accord her an official funeral, sent a government delegation to pay last respects.

Karachuonyo residents spoke of her deep involvement in local projects, from building schools and health facilities to mentoring young leaders. Many described her as a unifier who bridged ethnic and political divides in pursuit of Kenya’s progress.

Raila’s appeal for a monument in Nairobi echoed sentiments shared by other leaders and rights activists who said Asiyo’s work went beyond Karachuonyo and deserved national recognition

If honoured with a public monument, Asiyo would join a select group of Kenyan political figures memorialised for their service to the nation. Advocates believe such a tribute would inspire young women to follow her path of courage, resilience, and public service.

Phoebe Asiyo is remembered not only as a pioneering lawmaker but also as a symbol of integrity, empathy, and unwavering dedication to justice. Her legacy, Raila said, should remain “alive in the heart of the nation.”
