The National Police Service has issued a traffic advisory ahead of Sunday’s CHAN 2024 clash between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Zambia’s Chipolopolo, warning motorists of temporary road closures and diversions across the city.

The police statement, posted through X on Saturday, August 16, 2025, detailed the affected routes and outlined alternative paths for motorists to ensure smooth traffic flow during the match.

“Due to the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), the National Police Service wishes to inform the public of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi on Sunday, 17th August 2025,” read the advisory.

Key roads affected

Major roads affected include Aerodrome Road from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout, one lane of Lang’ata Road from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout, and one lane of Mombasa Road from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.

Motorists from Mombasa Road heading to Nairobi CBD are advised to use Likoni Road–Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.

Police also highlighted disruptions on Thika Superhighway, advising motorists to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4, Northern Bypass, or Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki, depending on their destination. Vehicles heading to Kasarani Stadium without access passes are to use the Service Lane at Exit 7 or 8.

“The National Police Service continues to work collaboratively with relevant agencies and urges all motorists to cooperate with officers on-site to ensure smooth traffic flow,” the statement added.

Additional police officers have been deployed, and authorities warned that they “will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules.”

The advisory comes as Harambee Stars aim to secure top position in Group A after already qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Fans are urged to plan their travel early and follow the alternative routes to avoid congestion and ensure safety during the high-profile match.
