Poghisio to Mudavadi: Stop hiding, Luhyas need a leader
Former West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio has challenged Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi to step up and assume the role of political leader for the Western Kenya region.
Speaking to a local TV station on Monday, July 28, 2025, Poghisio argued that his seniority and experience place him in a natural position to lead.
“Musalia is a very careful guy. He works very well in a government that directs him to ‘do this, do that.’ He doesn’t like to work in a government where he has to make the decisions, because then he will come out as a controversial leader, which he doesn’t like. And he is not known to be controversial,” he stated.
He expressed disappointment that, despite Mudavadi’s long political career, which began when he was appointed a minister at a young age, he has opted to take a backseat instead of providing the leadership expected of him by the region.

“I feel he should be the leader of Western Kenya by now. He should be the overall leader leading the Western region, but he has taken a very low position,” he said.
“He does not want to come out because he is the most senior now. He became a minister at a very young age. He is probably a better minister somewhere else than foreign affairs,” he added.
Foreign affairs
Poghisio also criticised the government’s approach to foreign affairs, lamenting the sidelining of experienced figures.
“Unfortunately, in Kenya, in our foreign relations, we have brought people who are new to the ministry and relegated those who are experienced far away. We need to bring back those people who are experienced to the Ministry to take charge.”
Referencing the recent abduction of Mwabili Mwagodi, Poghisio questioned Mudavadi’s silence and inaction on the matter.
“You can’t have people being tortured across the border, and you haven’t spoken about anything. Even the ambassador has not spoken,” he stated.
He urged the government to return seasoned leaders to key ministries like Foreign Affairs, saying, “We need people who can take charge and defend our citizens beyond our borders.”
