Busia County Senator Okiya Omtatah has laid out a sweeping, constitutionally grounded vision for Kenya’s future should he ascend to the presidency in 2027.

He has pledged to restore full sovereignty, enforce local ownership of resources, and review foreign ties that no longer serve national interests.

In a series of posts on X on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the human rights defender-turned-politician warned that Kenya would no longer be at the mercy of global influence or neo-colonial pressure under his leadership.

“My administration will be uncompromising in defending Kenya’s sovereignty,” he declared. “I will not compromise Kenya for global approval or external interests.”

Central to Omtatah’s plan is a commitment to reassess Kenya’s participation in all international groupings and bilateral arrangements, including the Commonwealth and partnerships such as the British American Corporation.

“If they cease to serve Kenya’s interests, we will reassess our participation,” he wrote, emphasising that foreign policy under his leadership would be “pro-Kenyan and Pan-Africanist, always anchored in the Constitution and public interest.”

He further vowed to strengthen democratic institutions by fully implementing Article 1(2) of the Constitution, which declares that sovereign power belongs to the people and must be exercised in accordance with the law.

Citing Article 196, Omtatah said public participation would be central to all legislative processes and decisions affecting governance structures and county boundaries. “Empowering Kenyans in all national decisions is non-negotiable,” he stated.

The senator also outlined concrete steps to safeguard Kenya’s mineral wealth and ensure sustainable resource management. He promised strict enforcement of the Mining Act 2016, noting that “a sovereign Kenya must indeed control its destiny.”

“I will ensure all stakeholders, including foreign investors, comply with local content rules and environmental safety standards,” he said. “Mining companies must have majority Kenyan ownership or meaningful local participation.”

In conclusion, Omtatah asserted that Kenya’s sovereignty is the foundation for prosperity, justice, and national pride. “I will never play the victim of history,” he said. “Sovereignty is not negotiable.”
