Omtatah: Ruto disqualified himself from 2nd term by violating the Constitution

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has declared that President William Ruto is unfit to seek a second term in office, citing what he termed as repeated violations of the Constitution and a dismal record in office.
Speaking on a local media station on Monday, July 14, 2025, Omtatah said the President should not assume his return to State House is guaranteed in 2027, aligning his remarks with a growing opposition narrative that Ruto must be a one-term president.
“Yes, he was elected to serve one term. Everybody’s elected to serve one term, renewable. But we are saying that for the president, his answer sheet, his grades are so bad, he cannot be given a second term,” Omtatah stated.
Constitutional violation
Accusing Ruto of breaching the Constitution, the senator emphasised that Kenya operates as a republic, where constitutional adherence should determine electoral eligibility.

Guided by this, Omtatah insisted Ruto’s actions disqualify him morally and politically from seeking re-election.
“He is ineligible for a second term because he has violated the cardinal law. And for me, that cardinal law is the Constitution,” Omtatah asserted.
2027 elections preparedness
Omtatah further criticised recent comments from Ruto’s allies suggesting that he will serve another term regardless of public sentiment, dismissing the rhetoric as anti-democratic.
“For him to say, come rain, come sunshine, he will serve a second term is not available to him. The voters will decide who serves in 2027 going forward as president, not William Ruto or his supporters,” he stated.
According to Omtatah, Ruto is laying the groundwork to manipulate the next election in his favour, an act he said the opposition is preparing for.
“Even if William Ruto chose himself to become the IEBC chairperson, I can assure you he will not win that election. Because what we are doing is, we know he is planning to steal, and we are not just preparing for a normal election. We are preparing to fight theft as we fight for votes,” Omtatah declared.
