ODM mourns death of retired Catholic Bishop Philip Sulumeti

The Orange Democratic Movement has mourned the death of the late retired Kakamega Bishop Philip Sulumeti while describing him as a humanitarian who devoted his life to the less privileged.

In a statement on the party official’s X account on Monday, November 10, 2025, ODM eulogised the Roman Catholic Bishop who passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2025.

“We mourn the passing of Bishop (Emeritus) Philip Sulumeti, who until his retirement on 15th December 2014 was the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega,” ODM said.

The party went on, celebrating the late Bishop Sulumeti as a dedicated servant of God who spent his time advocating for peace and humanitarian assistance to the less privileged members of society.

The party further remembered his service to God and humanity as exemplary one, which will forever be remembered by many.

“Bishop Sulumeti was a dedicated servant of God who spent his time advocating for peace and humanitarian assistance to the less privileged members of society. His service to God and humanity was exemplary and will forever be remembered by many. May his soul RIP,” ODM wrote.

Leaders Mourn Bishop Sulumeti

Notably, his death was officially confirmed by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops – Catholic Justice & Peace Department, on Monday, November 10, 2025, which extended heartfelt condolences to the clergy, religious, lay faithful, and all people of goodwill across the country.

Meanwhile, various leaders led by Former President Uhuru Kenyatta have paid their tributes to the clergy, family and friends of the late Bishop emeritus.

In a statement released by the Office of the 4th President of Kenya on Monday, November 10, 2025, Kenyatta described Bishop Sulumeti as a devoted servant of God and a pillar of faith whose life was defined by humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to service.

Kenyatta said the late bishop stood out as a moral compass and peacemaker who tirelessly worked to uplift communities through his ministry.

“Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega is a devoted servant of God and a pillar of faith whose life was defined by humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to service,” Uhuru stated.

On the other hand, the Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also mourned the late retired Kakamega Bishop Philip Sulumeti, remembering him as a man who served God and humanity in great faith, following the footsteps of Jesus Christ.

In a post on his official X account on Monday, November 10, 2025, Gachagua shared his tribute as he recalled past works by the late Bishop.

Likewise, former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi also joined several Kenyans in mourning the passing on of the retired Kakamega Bishop, Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti.
