Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Umulkher Harun has condemned attempts to generalise and question the loyalty of Somali Kenyans following an incident during a football match at Nyayo Stadium, where a few youths were seen stamping on the Kenyan flag.

The incident occurred on September 20, 2025, during a CAF Champions League fixture between Mogadishu City Club and Kenya Police FC.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Harun emphasised that the actions of a few should not define the entire Somali community.

“I, as a Kenyan, know for a fact that I don’t need to prove my identity to anybody. What infuriated me was seeing the flag disrespected, but we cannot generalise that all Somalis are not loyal,” she said.

She highlighted the contributions of Kenyan Somalis who have consistently represented and supported the country.

During sporting events, Somali fans cheer for Kenya just as nationals of other countries do for theirs.

“If this is a Somali who offended our flag as a Kenyan, why balkanise and say all Somalis are not loyal? The Kenyan Somalis were there fighting, representing, and cheering for their country,” Harun said.

Promoting nationality

Harun also addressed the broader issue of historical marginalisation and the role of political discourse in shaping perceptions.

She urged that nationality should be promoted without vilifying any group.

“Historically, marginalisation has happened. But after 2010, some independence has been achieved. Political goodwill should not be about one clan benefiting. We should focus on promoting nationality without sowing divisions,” she said.

She further noted that the era of digital media has amplified toxic conversations, giving everyone a platform to speak.

Harun appealed to Kenyans to use online tools responsibly to foster unity rather than deepen divisions. “We are in the era where everybody can share their media. My message is let’s use our online tools in a right manner that brings a country together without bringing divisions,” she added.

Following the viral clip, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested the 17-year-old boy in connection with the desecration of Kenya’s national flag during the match.

The boy is now in custody as investigations continue. Authorities confirmed that the actions of the two suspects constituted a violation of national law and a grave insult to Kenya’s dignity.
