Kirinyaga County Woman Representative Njeri Maina has invited the International Criminal Court (ICC) to carry out investigations into the looting, property destruction, and deaths that were witnessed during the June 25, 2025, Gen Z memorial protests.

Taking to her official X account on the night of Friday, June 27, 2025, Njeri stated that the country requires an impartial investigator since the government and the opposition are blaming each other for the violence witnessed during the protests.

“We require an impartial investigator. The government of Kenya has explicitly been implicated in organising, protecting, aiding and abetting procured civilian & police terror on its citizens. On the other hand, the government has come out guns blazing, claiming that it is the opposition that sponsored violent protests and destruction of property,” she stated.

Neutral investigator

She went ahead to state that the right person to investigate the recent incident must be neutral.

According to Njeri, anyone found responsible, whether he or she belongs to the government or not, must be charged by the ICC.

“Over 100, mostly Gen-Zs, have lost their lives, mothers whose children will never go home. Someone must do something, and that someone MUST be neutral!! So, we demand the International Criminal Court steps in. Charge those responsible, in and out of government. As many as of that opinion say aye!” she wrote on X.

Gachagua on protests

Njeri’s remarks come hours after Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) party leader Rigathi Gachagua fired back at President William Ruto’s allies over claims that he sponsored goons during the June 25, 2025, Gen Z memorial protests.

Speaking on Friday, June 27, 2025, during an interview with a local TV station, the former deputy president questioned why the goons were not arrested if they were indeed his.

Gachagua also questioned why the government did not take action if indeed it had intelligence that he was planning to sponsor goons during the protests.

“I don’t know how fragile this government is. That a CS Interior is walking in the streets of Nairobi in the morning, and you are saying that was an attempted coup. If they had intelligence that goons were being paid by Rigathi Gachagua or anyone else, why did they not arrest these goons?” he said.

He went ahead to claim that if the goons who wreaked havoc during the protests were his, they would have been shot or would be in custody by now.

“If they were my goons today, they would have been shot dead or in custody. Whey, if they had intelligence that Gachagua or anyone else had paid goons to come and cause mayhem in Nairobi, why didn’t they act on that intelligence? How did they allow goons to go to a police station unarmed and take over our police stations?” Gachagua said.
