Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has affirmed that the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) is a people-driven political movement and not the personal property of any single individual.

Speaking on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Natembeya emphasised the need to reposition DAP-K as a national party with wide appeal beyond its traditional strongholds.

“DAP-K does not belong to the party leader or me; it belongs to the people. We are going to rebrand it to have a national outlook,” he said.

The governor also dismissed suggestions that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s visit to his office signalled political realignment, saying there was no reason for him to avoid the visit.

He clarified that Murkomen signed the visitors’ book as required, continued with his engagements, and afterwards, Natembeya himself travelled to Nairobi for official duties.

“Lazima angeletwa pale na nani; sasa ati nitoroke kwa sababu Murkomen anakuja Trans-Nzoia; nitoroke kwa nini? Alikuja nikamsalimia, yeye akaenda kwa shughuli yake, mimi nikapanda Ndenge nikakuja Nairobi.”

Loosely interpreted as;

“He must be brought there. Was I supposed to run away because Murkopmen were coming to Trans Nzoia? Why should I run? He came to greet me and went about his business, and I boarded a flight and came to Nairobi,” he stated.

Political stance

Additionally, the governor reaffirmed that his political stance remains unchanged, maintaining that he is firmly in the opposition and continues to believe that the country is not on the right track.

He stressed that the visit by Murkomen to his office should not be interpreted as a shift in his position or an alignment with the current administration.

“Msimamo wetu ni ule ule ya kwamba sisi tuko upinzani, na tunaamini kwamba nchi hailekei pazuri, haiwezi basilica ati kwa sababu Murkomen alikuja kunitembelea.”

Loosely interpreted as:

Our stand is still the same: that we are in the opposition, and we believe our country is headed in the right direction. which cannot change because Murkome came to visit me,” he added
