Samburu West Member of Parliament Naisula Lesuuda has added her voice to the growing condemnation of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his controversial remarks on the death of the late Raila Odinga.

Through her official X handle on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Lesuuda advised the governor to be more mindful of his words and to learn the importance of measured communication, especially as a public leader.

“I learnt early when I started working with warring communities during The Peace Caravan that as a leader one must be very clear in their messaging, never needing a second chance to explain what one meant.

“This is because by the time you explain, the damage has been caused, sometimes leading to lives being lost,” the MP wrote on X.

Lesuuda’s message to Kahiga

The lawmaker said that an apology from Kahiga should have been enough, adding that continued attempts to explain his earlier comments were only worsening the situation.

“So, Governor Kahiga, an apology and withdrawal would have sufficed, but not trying to explain yourself,” she stated.

Lesuuda also cautioned political leaders to speak responsibly when addressing their communities, stressing that words can carry serious consequences.

“One should say what they mean when with their community and even with the other community, not what is convenient at the moment,” she added.

“This should be a lesson to all of us leaders so that it doesn’t matter which side of the divide you belong to, a wrong is wrong and such should be called out at all times.”

The legislator made it clear that her message was not about tribes or political divisions but about the responsibility that comes with leadership.

“For the record, this is not about two communities but about the damage a leader’s statement can cause,” she concluded.

Kahiga’s remarks and apology

Governor Mutahi Kahiga has been under intense criticism since making remarks that appeared to celebrate Raila Odinga’s death, calling it “God’s plan” to restore political balance in Kenya.

“You guys can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. Everybody can see that.

“We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us,” Kahiga said at a burial in Nyeri.

He later apologised on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, saying his remarks were personal and not representative of Nyeri residents or the Council of Governors.

“I want to apologise to the family, the larger ODM, my colleagues and those in the larger Nyanza region.

“My remarks are personal, and not those of the people of Nyeri and the Council of Governors,” he said, before announcing his resignation as vice chair of the Council of Governors.

Despite his apology, calls for his resignation as Nyeri Governor continue to grow, with political leaders, civil society groups and members of the public accusing him of dishonouring the memory of the late Raila Odinga.
