Muthama calls for justice over Albert Ojwang’s death

Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has called for justice following the death of Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody.
In a statement on Monday, June 10, 2025, Muthama invoked President William Ruto’s campaign promise to Kenyans, which assured of an end to extra-judicial killings.
According to Muthama, who also serves as a commissioner at the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), what happened to Ojwang is both tragic and unacceptable.
“During our campaign, we assured Kenyans that President William Ruto’s administration would put an end to extrajudicial killings. Therefore, those responsible for the death of Albert Ojwang must be held fully accountable under the law. What happened to him is both tragic and unacceptable. Such acts not only violate human rights but also damage our country’s reputation on the global stage. A few rogue characters must not be allowed to operate with impunity,” Muthama stated.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Mzee Ojwang during this difficult time.”
Muthama joins other politicians and Kenyans calling for justice for Ojwang, who died on Saturday while in police custody.
Ojwang was arrested on Friday, June 7, 2025, following a formal complaint from Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Kenya Police Service (KPS), Eliud Lagat, who claimed his reputation was being tarnished by Ojwang’s social media posts.
“The reasons why the late Ojwang was arrested together with others are because there was a complaint that had been lodged by the DIG KPS about his name being tarnished,” Kanja stated on Monday, June 9, 2025.
“It is on that basis investigations were being carried out because he has got a right. I will be giving updates,” Kanja, addressing concern, promised to provide regular updates on the case.
Ojwang’s subsequent transfer from Homa Bay to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where he died under disputed circumstances, has fuelled allegations of police misconduct and intensified calls for accountability within the National Police Service.
