Late teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang’s widow, Nevnina Anyango, has moved to remember him during Valentine’s season, months after his untimely passing inside a police cell in Nairobi.

In a video shared on her TikTok page on Sunday, February 15, 2026, Nevninah is seen arriving at Albert’s grave and pausing there for minutes while holding a bouquet of flowers.

In the video, Albert’s grave is seen looking neat after being cemented, and Nevninah went ahead to place the bouquet on the tombstone in remembrance of their love.

While sharing the short clip, Nevninah wished Albert a happy Valentine’s Day even in demise and vowed to always remember him.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, my love. I will always remember you,” she wrote.

Albert’s untimely passing

The tragic chain of events that led to the death of the 31-year-old blogger and teacher began on June 7, 2025, when he was arrested at his home in Kakoth village, Homa Bay County.

The arrest followed allegations of online defamation against Deputy Inspector-General Eliud Lagat. Shortly after his arrest, Ojwang was transported approximately 350 kilometres to Nairobi’s Central Police Station.

In the early hours of June 8, 2025, he was found unconscious inside his cell and was later pronounced dead at Mbagathi Hospital. Police initially claimed that he had injured himself while in custody.

However, a post-mortem examination revealed head trauma, neck compression and multiple bruises, findings that sharply contradicted the initial police account and intensified public suspicion.

News of his death ignited nationwide outrage. On June 9, 2025, protests against police brutality erupted in different parts of the country, with human rights groups, teachers’ unions and political leaders demanding accountability. Members of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers joined residents in calling for transparency, while vigils were held in his honour.

On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, a requiem mass was held at Ridgeways Baptist Church along Kiambu Road in Nairobi.

During the emotional service, Ojwang’s father, Meshack Ojwang’ Opiyo, described the loss of his only son as devastating and likened his death to that of Abel, terming it an act born of jealousy and injustice.

His widow, Nevninah, delivered a tearful tribute, recounting how they met in 2021 through a mutual friend from Pwani University and how their love grew into marriage and parenthood. She revealed that his last words to her were, “I love you; see you soon.”

On Thursday, July 3, 2025, Ojwang’s body was flown to his native Homa Bay County. Emotions ran high as family members, friends and local leaders received his remains. Later that day, his casket arrived in Kokwanyo village ahead of his burial.

Albert Ojwang was laid to rest on Friday, July 4, 2025, at his rural home in Kokwanyo, Homa Bay County. The burial ceremony was marked by grief, anger and renewed calls for justice, as mourners demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into his death.

In the aftermath, six police officers, including the Officer Commanding Station at Central Police Station, were interdicted, while investigations were launched by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.

Legal battles also followed, including a petition filed at the Constitutional and Human Rights Division of the High Court seeking to suspend Deputy Inspector-General Eliud Lagat from office.

On October 3, 2025, the High Court declined to dismiss the petition, affirming that it had jurisdiction to hear the constitutional questions raised.
