Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has raised concerns over growing land conflicts in parts of Nakuru County, warning that they pose a serious security threat if not addressed urgently.

Speaking in Nakuru on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Murkomen said disputes between communities and the illegal invasion of public land have fuelled tensions as individuals and groups compete for ownership of certain parcels.

“We are taking steps to resolve the matter amicably through a multi-agency approach involving the Ministry of Lands, affected institutions and communities, and leaders,” he stated.

Murkomen condemned politicians whom he accused of deliberately stoking ethnic divisions for selfish political gain.

“The conflicts are exacerbated by incitement from politicians who are hellbent on stoking ethnic tensions to achieve selfish political ends.”

Further, he assured residents that the government remains committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes and will not tolerate actions that undermine unity or public order.

“We will take stern action against any politician who is found to be inciting ethnic divisions in the county,” he added.

Verification exercise

This comes a month after a land verification and validation exercise began in Bahati and Dundori Trading Centres to authenticate land ownership and facilitate the issuance of title deeds.

The exercise is part of the tenure regularisation process and is being overseen by the County Government of Nakuru’s Department of Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development. Once completed, over 1,000 plot owners will be issued with title deeds.

Speaking in June 2025, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development, John Kihagi, said the initiative aims to enhance land digitalisation and streamline land registration processes.

He added that it was a critical step in resolving long-standing land ownership issues in the two centres.

Further, he indicated that the verification process seeks to confirm the physical location and allotments of Bahati and Dundori plots to ensure accuracy and legitimacy in title deed issuance, a move expected to spur economic growth in Bahati Sub-County.

“The verification process entails the substantiation of ownership documents by technical officers. These activities are vital for preparing precise and validated documentation that will be submitted to the Survey of Kenya,” noted the CECM.
