Murkomen vows relentless war against Al-Shabaab

Interior Security and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has asserted the government’s unwavering commitment to the fight against Al-Shabaab.
His remarks come just days after a chilling attack by suspected Al-Shabaab militants on Basuba village, located deep within the Boni Forest in Lamu County.
According to government reports, about 60 heavily armed militants stormed the village at around 9:00 pm on July 25, 2025, firing indiscriminately and pursuing residents in their homes.
Residents said the attackers instilled fear and panic among locals, many of whom were unable to call for help due to the remote location and poor connectivity.
The militants also reportedly surrounded the nearby General Service Unit (GSU) police camp, located just meters from the village, triggering a fierce gunfight between the officers and the insurgents.
The exchange of fire lasted for nearly an hour, during which the militants launched four rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) towards the camp and the surrounding area.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, though the attack has raised fresh concerns about the security of residents in areas near the Kenya-Somalia border.
Fight against terrorism
Speaking during a Jukwaa la Usalama meeting in Laikipia County on Thursday, July 31, 2025, Murkomen stressed that Kenya remains under persistent threat from the Somalia-based terrorist group, warning that the war on terror is far from over.
“We are fighting a vicious enemy; we have never stopped doing so. Kenyans do not hear much, but the Al-Shabaab attacks have not stopped. We have had it continuously for the last 20 years or so,” the CS said.
He lauded the efforts of the country’s security forces, including the police, military, National Police Reservists, and citizens living in border counties, for their role in repelling attacks and maintaining vigilance.
“Our police officers, soldiers, multi-agency teams, and reservists have done a wonderful job in protecting Kenyans and our national facilities,” he said.
The CS also acknowledged the ongoing challenges in neighbouring Somalia, particularly in Jubaland and regions close to the Kenyan border, which have seen a resurgence of militant activity.
“We are seized of all issues happening in border counties about terrorist attacks, and we will continue to provide our officers with the necessary support and equipment,” Murkomen assured.
