Murkomen: Some foreigners in Kenya are involved in muggings and hooliganism

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has acknowledged the presence of foreigners suspected to be involved in various criminal activities within Nairobi.
The CS has said that investigations are ongoing to determine whether some of them were directly involved in the recent protests and chaos that rocked the capital.
Speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the CS said that while the government is yet to conclude its assessment on the full extent of foreign involvement, preliminary reports indicate the presence of individuals engaged in illegal activity within the city.
“On the presence of foreigners, at the moment, we are yet to deal with that issue fully, but it is true that there is some information that there are some foreigners who are operating in Nairobi City,” he said.
He went on to specify that some of these individuals have been linked to petty crimes and public disorder.
“Some of them are involved in various criminal activities, including muggings and acts of hooliganism in this country,” he stated.

However, when addressing whether any of the foreigners were directly linked to the recent protests, the Interior CS said further consultation with investigative authorities was required.
“But the ones who are linked directly to the protests, we will have to look at those who have been charged. And specifically, you see, I have to consult the DCI,” he explained.
He nonetheless confirmed that should any of the foreigners be found culpable of involvement in the looting and violence witnessed during the demonstrations, the government would not hesitate to take firm action against them.
“But it is true there are some foreigners in our city who have been involved in various criminal activities in the past, and should we find them having been involved in the lootings during the protests, we will make sure they are brought to justice,” he said.
