Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government, Kipchumba Murkomen, has noted a huge drop in banditry attacks in the North Rift region.

Taking to his X handle on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Murkomen shared that the improvement comes after a series of security and service delivery engagements under the Jukwaa La Usalama programme.

He explained that the remarks followed the close of the Jukwaa La Usalama Rift Valley Chapter, which also marked the 28th stop in their nationwide security and service delivery tour.

Jukwaa La Usalama gains

Moreover, he said the tours are not just for listening to concerns but also for making immediate changes where possible.

Murkomen noted that the final product of the nationwide forums would be a comprehensive policy document outlining the changes needed to improve service delivery.

However, he stressed that even before the document is ready, operational adjustments made along the way have already brought noticeable results.

“The operational tweaks we have made have re-energised our security agencies and NGAOs and focused our attention on pressing challenges,” he said.

Reduction of banditry

One of the key gains, according to Murkomen, has been in the Kerio Valley region, an area that had long struggled with insecurity.

“The Kerio Valley region, which had serious security challenges, has seen a significant drop in banditry,” he reported.

In addition, he said a nationwide crackdown on second-generation alcohol and illicit drugs is currently underway, targeting both urban and rural areas.

The Interior CS explained that these measures are part of a broader effort to strengthen law enforcement and create safer communities.

Thus, the forums have allowed security officers to receive direct feedback from the public and act on it without delay.

Looking ahead, Murkomen said he is eager to take the Jukwaa La Usalama engagements to the remaining parts of the country.

He described them as a key element of the government’s bottom-up approach to governance, which aims to ensure that solutions come from listening to the people most affected.

Consequently, he urged Kenyans to participate actively when the forums reach their areas, saying that their input will help shape policies that address real challenges on the ground.
